Is It Not Good To Make Society Full Of Beautiful People?

Uglies, written by Scott Westerfeld, is a science-fiction four-book series which is set in the future in a world where everyone is turned "pretty" at the age of sixteen. The Uglies series deals with themes of emotional and physical change, body image, individuality and creativity, conformity, body image, peer pressure, and being told how to look, act and behave by the "government". I had gotten the first two books, Uglies and Pretties, from my sister for Christmas and upon reading them, quickly became enthralled and needed to get the rest of the series. On a whole the series was great. I really enjoyed reading each book and would recommend them to anyone who likes young adult fiction/minor sci-fi.

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly to a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever. Grade: A+

Tally has finally become pretty. Now her looks are beyond perfect, her clothes are awesome, her boyfriend is totally hot, and she's completely popular. It's everything she's ever wanted.
But beneath all the fun- the nonstop parties, the high-tech luxury, the total freedom- is a nagging sense that something's wrong. Something important. Then a message from Tally's ugly past arrives. Reading it, Tally remembers what's wrong with pretty life, and the fun stops cold.
Now she has to choose between fighting to forget what she knows and fighting for her life- because the authorities don't intend to let anyone with this information survive. Grade: A-

Tally thought they were a rumor, but now she's one of them. A Special. A super-amped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid.
But maybe being perfectly programmed with strength and focus isn't better than anything she's ever known. Tally still has memories of something else.
But it's easy for her to tune that out- until she's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she's programmed to complete. Either way, Tally's world will never be the same. Grade: A-

It's a few years after rebel Tally Youngblood took down the uglies/pretties/specials regime. Without those strict roles and rules, the world is in a complete cultural renaissance. "Tech-heads" flaunt their latest gadgets, "kickers" spread gossip and trends, and "surge monkeys" are hooked on extreme plastic surgery. And it's all monitored on a bazillion different cameras. The world is like a gigantic game of American Idol. Whoever is getting the most buzz gets the most votes. Popularity rules.
As if being fifteen doesn't suck enough, Aya Fuse's rank of 451,396 is so low, she's a total nobody. An extra. Her only chance to escape extra-land is to find a big story to kick- something wild and unexpected.
Then Aya meets a clique of girls who pull crazy tricks, yet are deeply secretive of it. But the Sly Girls are hiding something bigger- an explosive discovery that may change the face of the brave new world forever. If Aya kicks this story, she'll be propelled into the world of fame, celebrity... and extreme danger. A world she's not prepared for. Grade: A

At The End It All Begins

I can remember when we were kids we would spend almost whole summers out at Gramma's house on the sandy shore of Lake Superior just 55km north of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. One of the things I remember most is the selection of wild fruit and vegetables that could be found in that area. Peas used to grow in the place where the grass met the sand down at the beach and my sister could always be found down in that little area eating the peas like they were going out of style.

I miss being able to spend time out there. Laying in the sun, paddle-boat adventures, toad hunting at night, bonfires with all the kids from down the beach, quad rides through the bush, beautiful view of the lake, friendly neighbours, the smell of fresh air, the stars in the sky at night, feeding chippy from your hand, boats and sea-doos, country music, family, great food, etc.

I'd give anything to be a kid again and never have to grow up.

Rain On My Parade

I haven't updated in a couple days. This is because:
a) It started to snow again
b) I spent over $40 on lottery tickets and won nothing, not even a free play
c) I gave Adam his birthday present two days early
d) I'm going to be called back to work soon
e) My glass of water is at the other side of the room and I can't move because Bubbles is sleeping on my lap
f) I think Bubbles farted on me
g) My dresser broke
h) My room is messy
i) I've been eating a lot of pasta lately
j) There is sand in the toilet
k) I did laundry last week
l) The librarian in town can't spell "ugly"
m) My mitts have a hole in them
n) The first thing I see every morning is an old receipt on my floor

Aww, Shucks

"It's not that I want the world to know I have a girlfriend, it's that I want them to know I'm going out with you because I think you're great"

Porn Star for Senator

I was watching CNN this afternoon. They were interviewing a Porn Star who is running for Senator. She was bashing a current Senator for being caught up in a sex scandal with a prostitute... Like she's so much better than he is... hahah
What is this world coming to? You know something's wrong down there in the great U.S. of A. when people think a porn star has the right morals and values to be senator. Not only that, but the current senator might lose his job because he paid for sex, that lonely bastard... Reminds me of my dad. And I'm not kidding. But anyways, that senator should not only lose his job, but also go to jail because prostitution is illegal in the States (minus Nevada and Rhode Island). When the porn star was asked if she follows politics she said "not really, but anyone who knows me knows I'm always up for a hard challenge" or something along those lines.
I have an idea... How about electing someone who doesn't pay for sex, someone who doesn't have sex with a million people on camera, and someone who knows what the eff the job entails. It's scary to think that a porn star might be the next senator.

I'm not that disturbed about the guy and the prostitute, because lots of people pay for sex, ie. my dad, and you have to expect something like that from the world leaders (they all do it... Remember Clinton and What's-her-face?) but what kind of does bother me is that when he apologized at a press conference his wife stood by him and supported him. Is she mental? He just cheated on her with a scummy prostitute (probably not the first time either) and all she can say about it is "That's ok honey, I don't mind getting STD's. Now go apologize to the world and I'll stand by you and make myself look like a pitiful fool for the rest of my life because I have no respect for myself and I believe this is the best I can ever do. I know that I'm worthless and good for nothing because you have told me several times that I am."

I Smell Sex and Candy

In honor of the upcoming 'Valentine's Day' I took it upon myself to put together a list of the 20 Sexiest Songs of All Time. I know I'm probably missing some good ones so if you think of any that you feel should be on the list, please share! There were two songs that I wasn't sure if I should put on the list... Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On and Chris Isaak's Wicked Games. Most people would probably have these two songs at the top of their 'sexy songs list' but I can't stand either of them so I didn't put them on mine. I started the list at #20 and worked my way down to the #1 sexiest song. I hope you like it...

Today is Groundhog Day so I thought it would be nice to write a Haiku to celebrate this special occasion:

Groundhog saw shadow
Six more weeks of winter hell
Evil snowman lives

In Film, You Are A Totally Different Person Than In The Video

Here's one of Kristi's first animations from her first year at Sheridan College.
